The Cathedral’s Bamberger Reiter (oldest secular equestrian statue in German art, c. 1235) and the Schlenkerla Rauchbier brewery draw heritage and beer tourists equally. Würzburg’s Tiepolo Baroque Residence is 1 hour south.
Lviv’s Historic Centre — inscribed 1998 — is the most completely preserved medieval and Renaissance city in Ukraine: Rynok Square, the Latin Cathedral (1360), the Armenian Cathedral (1363), and the Dominican Cathedral within walking distance of each other, documenting 700 years of Central European cultural intersection. The Sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidaurus — inscribed 1988 — includes the best-preserved ancient Greek theatre (340 BCE, 14,000 capacity, extraordinary acoustics) and the complete healing sanctuary where ancient patients slept, bathed, and watched drama as medical treatment. Mycenae and Tiryns are 1 hour northwest.
Lhasa’s Historic Ensemble — inscribed 1994 (extended 2000, 2001) — includes the Potala Palace (1,000 rooms, 13 stories, winter residence of the Dalai Lamas), the Jokhang Temple (641 CE, the most sacred site in Tibetan Buddhism), and the Norbulingka summer garden palace. Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse is 4 hours west.
Zanzibar’s Stone Town — inscribed 2000 — is the former capital of the Busaidi Sultanate: 500+ carved wooden doors, the Old Fort, and the Anglican Cathedral built on the demolished slave market. Freddie Mercury was born in Stone Town in 1946. The Ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani (medieval gold trade, Swahili Coast) are 5 hours south by road and boat.
Potosí — inscribed 1987, on UNESCO’s Danger List since 2014 — was the largest city in the Western Hemisphere in 1650, sustained by the Cerro Rico silver mountain that financed the Spanish Empire. The Casa de la Moneda (largest colonial building in South America) and the Colonial churches are open. Sucre is 3.5 hours northeast.
Carcassonne’s fortified city — inscribed 1997 — is the best-preserved double-walled medieval fortress in Europe: 52 towers built in the Visigothic period and expanded after the 1209 Cathar Crusade. The Canal du Midi runs through the valley below; the Pont du Gard Roman aqueduct is 2 hours east.
Hampi’s Group of Monuments — inscribed 1986 — preserves the ruins of Vijayanagara, a city of 500,000 people and capital of the last great Hindu empire of India, sacked and destroyed in 1565. Pattadakal’s Chalukya temples are 3 hours northwest; Badami’s rock-cut cave sanctuaries are 4 hours northwest.
Kotor’s Natural and Culturo-Historical Region has been inscribed since 1979 — the fortified medieval city embedded in the Bay of Kotor, the best-preserved Venetian walled city on the eastern Adriatic. Dubrovnik is 1 hour south; Mostar’s rebuilt Ottoman bridge is 3 hours northwest.
