Formally founded in Milan on January 20, 1918, Società Editrice Vita e Pensiero was established as an independent publishing house by Catholic intellectuals, later becoming the academic press of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore.

Origins and Early Publications

The publishing venture drew its name from the cultural journal Vita e Pensiero, founded in Milan in 1914 by Franciscan friar Agostino Gemelli, physician Ludovico Necchi, and Monsignor Francesco Olgiati. On January 20, 1918, the same circle—together with Armida Barelli, who assumed the role of managing administrator, and Costanza Malcotti—signed the founding deed creating the dedicated publishing entity, Società Editrice Vita e Pensiero. Operating from its first historical headquarters at Corso Venezia 15 in Milan, the house sought to participate actively in modern philosophical, economic, and social debates from a rigorous Catholic perspective. Its first volume, published in 1918, was Francesco Olgiati’s critical monograph ‘Carlo Marx’. Through early monographs and specialized journals like the Rivista di Filosofia Neo-Scolastica, the house established a coherent intellectual platform during the final months of World War I.

Institutional Affiliation and Archival History

The publishing enterprise preceded the university with which it is now identified. Ownership of the publishing house was entrusted to the Istituto Giuseppe Toniolo di Studi Superiori upon the institute’s legal creation on February 6, 1920. When the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore was formally inaugurated on December 7, 1921, Vita e Pensiero was designated as the official university press, coordinating scholarly publications across philosophy, law, sociology, pedagogy, and theology. Throughout the interwar decades, the press published foundational academic research and translated prominent international scholars. The house’s early physical records suffered a catastrophic blow in August 1943, when allied aerial bombing destroyed its warehouse and central archive near Piazza Sant’Ambrogio. Today headquartered at Largo Agostino Gemelli 1 within the university’s historic monastic cloisters, Vita e Pensiero remains Italy’s longest-running university press.
