1. The Foundation (1924)
In March 1924, under the direction of French Prime Minister Raymond Poincaré, the Compagnie Française des Pétroles (CFP) was established. Designed to secure France’s independent energy supply following the redrawing of Middle Eastern borders after World War I, CFP would eventually grow into the global behemoth known today as TotalEnergies.
2. Development and Industrial Impact
In the aftermath of the First World War, European powers scrambled to secure reliable energy resources. CFP was created by consolidating the shares of the Turkish Petroleum Company that France had acquired from Germany. Operating initially as a purely strategic holding company, CFP soon expanded into refining and distribution, gradually building a vast network of infrastructure across Europe and the Middle East. Over the decades, it survived the turbulence of the 20th century, merging with competitors like Petrofina and Elf Aquitaine to solidify its dominance.
