The Youth of Parisian Couture: Marcel Rochas and the Art Déco Elegance of Maison Rochas, 1925

The Paris of 1925 was an artistic volcano where Art Déco architecture, jazz, and liberated feminine silhouettes intersected. Marcel Rochas (1902–1955), having abandoned law for couturier ateliers, opened his salon on the prestigious Rue de la Paix before establishing his grand headquarters at 12 Avenue Matignon. Rochas introduced revolutionary design codes: dresses with pockets to liberate women’s hands, broad-shouldered jackets that accentuated the waist, and two-tone swimwear.

His aesthetic motto—Jeunesse, Simplicité, Personnalité—captivated Hollywood icons from Carole Lombard to Marlene Dietrich. Rochas understood that garments and olfactory identity formed a seamless continuum of haute couture.

In 1944, amidst wartime Paris, Rochas created his supreme olfactory masterpiece: Femme. Blended by legendary nose Edmond Roudnitska with luscious peach, plum, and warm chypre accords, the fragrance was presented in a voluptuous crystal amphora designed by René Lalique and inspired by the hourglass curves of actress Mae West. Draped in black Chantilly lace, the packaging became an instant monument of twentieth-century French decorative arts.

Later masterpieces like Eau de Rochas (1970) extended the house’s prestige across generations. Preserved today under the French luxury group Interparfums, Maison Rochas celebrates a century of olfactory poetry, retaining its noble pedigree in the historic golden triangle of Paris.
