Established in 1916 in the industrial heart of Brianza, the mechanical workshop founded by Innocente and Carlo Rigamonti in Costa Masnaga emerged to construct and repair railway freight stock vital for wartime transport logistics.

Origins Along the Brianza Rail Corridors

Positioned directly adjacent to the Monza-Molteno-Lecco railway line, the workshop initially focused on assembling wooden and steel freight wagons, bogies, and brake gear for regional transport networks. The brothers Rigamonti capitalized on Brianza’s deep tradition of metalworking craftsmanship, expanding their facilities into a full-scale industrial complex equipped with private rail spurs, traverser turntables, and heavy overhead gantries. By the 1920s, the company was officially registered among the primary suppliers of rolling stock for the Ferrovie dello Stato.

Engineering Prowess and Twentieth-Century Rail Mastery

Throughout the interwar and post-war decades, Officine di Costamasnaga S.p.A. built thousands of passenger coaches, articulated postal vans, specialized tank wagons, and articulated electric tramways for urban networks in Milan, Rome, and Naples. In the late twentieth century, the company advanced into high-speed articulated bogies and suburban double-deck trainsets before successive mergers integrated the site into international railway groups.

Following corporate realignments in the early 2000s, primary rail assembly on the historical site ceased. The expansive industrial sheds and track connections across Costa Masnaga remain landmark fixtures of Lombard railway history, with sections repurposed for specialized logistics and engineering services.
