In August 1927, master craftsman Koichi Kawai founded the Kawai Musical Instrument Research Laboratory in Hamamatsu. Driven by an unyielding dedication to acoustic perfection, he set out to build the finest pianos in the world.

Kawai had previously been a key figure in the development of the Japanese piano industry, working alongside Torakusu Yamaha. However, seeking to pursue his own uncompromising vision of tone and touch, he struck out on his own. The interwar years in Japan saw a rising middle class and an increasing appreciation for Western classical music, creating a fertile market. Despite the challenges of material shortages during the wartime era, Kawai’s commitment to innovation never wavered. Post-war, the company revolutionized piano manufacturing by introducing alternative materials, such as ABS Styran and later carbon fiber, to create actions that are remarkably stable and responsive.
