Under the Shadow of Vesuvius: The 1925 Napoli–Pompei Highway and the Infrastructure Heritage of Southern Italy

Following the 1924 opening of the Milano–Laghi motorway in northern Italy, civil engineer Piero Puricelli turned his sights southward. In 1925, the Società Anonima Autostrade Meridionali was incorporated in Naples with banking and municipal support to relieve severe congestion on the narrow coastal road connecting the Port of Naples with Portici, Torre del Greco, and Castellammare di Stabia.

Constructed through fertile Vesuvian soils and volcanic basalt quarries, the highway eliminated railway level crossings, utilized elevated viaducts, and featured durable tar-macadam surfacing designed specifically for high-speed pneumatic motorcars and tourist autobuses, inaugurating commercial toll operations in June 1929.

The Napoli–Pompei route was not merely a freight corridor; it was designed as an aesthetic triumphalway, allowing travelers to gaze upon the smoking cone of Mount Vesuvius to the east and the azure expanse of the Gulf of Naples to the west before arriving directly at the excavations of Pompeii. It established the template for cultural tourism infrastructure in twentieth-century Europe.

Later integrated into the national A3 motorway concession spanning Campania and Calabria, Autostrade Meridionali managed the corridor for nearly a century, representing a defining chapter in Italian civil engineering and Mediterranean highway history.
