Terragni Rationalism RoadBook — Four Buildings from Como to Milan (1928–1936)
Some fifty kilometres separate the two cities in which Giuseppe Terragni did his work, and four buildings are enough to follow him from the first statement to the last. Como holds two. The Novocomum, completed in 1929 when the architect was twenty-five, is the apartment block that announced him. The Casa del Fascio, designed between 1932 and 1936, is the single most studied building of Italian Rationalism, and the hardest building on this route to look at calmly. Then Milan, and two apartment houses built with Pietro Lingeri: Casa Rustici on Corso Sempione, designed in 1933 and completed in 1935, and the smaller Casa Toninello on Via Perasto, in Isola. Private commissions and party commissions by the same hand in the same decade: the contradiction is the point, and it is not resolved here.
