Precision mechanical clockwork, Attilio Mussino’s illustrated packaging, and Piedmontese metalcraft on Lake Orta.
Founded in 1916 in Omegna on the northern shores of Lake Orta, Ditta Ettore Cardini grew from a specialized wartime metal stamping shop into one of Europe’s most revered artisan makers of clockwork lithographed tin toys during the golden interwar decade.
Cusio Metalworking and Toymaking Genius
Ettore Cardini inherited a longstanding family tradition of Cusio metalworking, rooted in brass casting and agricultural implements. Incorporating his enterprise in 1916, Cardini initially focused on cold-drawn sheet-metal stamping and precision mechanical parts. Between 1922 and 1928, channeling his mechanical ingenuity into the decorative toy trade, Cardini designed an exclusive catalog of thirteen clockwork toys celebrated for their lifelike proportions, lustrous multi-color lithography, and robust spring-driven mechanisms. Masterpieces included the Fiat 18BL military truck, the 50 HP Torpedo, the elegant Fiat 509 Limousine, the express steam locomotive 690, and the miniature ocean liner Saturnia.
Mussino’s Packaging and Collector Prestige
A breakthrough hallmark of Cardini’s craft was its packaging: the cardboard boxes were conceived as interactive scenery rather than disposable wrapping, transforming upon opening into garages, harbors, rail depots, or airport hangars. The packaging was illustrated by master draughtsman Attilio Mussino, famed for his seminal illustrated Pinocchio and contributions to the Corriere dei Piccoli. Following the Wall Street crisis of 1929 and the founder’s death, toy manufacturing ceased as the workshops pivoted to automotive accessories for FIAT. Today, surviving Cardini toys and their illustrated boxes are among the rarest treasures of twentieth-century Italian design, prized in international decorative art auctions and displayed in historic toy museums.
