The Architecture & Design Museum — the AD Museum — shows Finnish and foreign design and architecture: industrial design, fashion, graphics, buildings. It is among the oldest museums of its kind anywhere, founded in 1873 as the Museum of Applied Arts, and it has been in this former school on Korkeavuorenkatu since 1978. The permanent display follows Finnish design from 1870 to the present; the collection runs to more than 75,000 objects.

History
The museum was founded in 1873, when applied arts collections were being assembled across Europe on the model of South Kensington: objects gathered to teach manufacturers and their designers. Finland was then a Grand Duchy of the Russian Empire, and the collection grew with the national movement that would produce, within two generations, both Finnish independence and a recognisable Finnish modernism.
The building it now occupies was not made for it. Gustaf Nyström designed it in 1894 as a school for the Swedish-speaking community, boys and girls together, and it was completed in 1895. The museum took it over in 1978. In 2002 the institution simplified its name from Taideteollisuusmuseo to Designmuseo, and in 2024 it merged with the Museum of Finnish Architecture, which stood on the same block, to form a single museum of architecture and design.
A purpose-built home is being prepared: a new Museum of Architecture and Design is planned for the Makasiiniranta waterfront.
What you see
Red brick, three storeys, a row of stepped gables along the roofline and a slate spire over the centre. The ground floor is banded in pale plaster; the upper windows sit in pointed brick arches. It is the Gothic of the 1890s — national romanticism’s immediate predecessor in Finland, and a deliberate claim to seriousness for a school.
The main door is on Korkeavuorenkatu, under the spire; an accessible entrance opens off the inner courtyard.
Practical information
- One ticket admits to both museum buildings and all current exhibitions; under-18s enter free.
- Late opening on Tuesday in winter, until 20:00.
- Works on Koulupuistikko Square in front of the museum began on 3 August 2026 and affect tram services; both entrances stay open.
Getting there
The museum is in Kaartinkaupunki, in the centre of Helsinki, a short walk from Esplanadi and the Market Square. Trams serve Korkeavuorenkatu, with services altered while the square outside is being rebuilt.
