At a glance

Where Via Laietana opens into Plaça de l’Àngel, three office buildings were put up as one block: a continuous front that turns the corner in a shallow curve, with an iron-and-glass canopy over the ground floor and a run of glazed balconies above. They were built in 1918 for Tomàs Recolons, to a design by Enric Sagnier i Villavecchia, the most prolific architect Barcelona has had. The city lists them as a bé d’interès urbanístic.

What you see

The corner is the whole design. Sagnier rounds it rather than cutting it, and hangs a canopy of iron and frosted glass across the ground floor, scalloped along its edge and carried on brackets with lanterns at either end. Above it the front rises in plain verticals: window over window, with slim glazed balconies and railings of woven wire. It is a commercial building that wanted to be read as calm, which is what Noucentisme was for after the flourishes of Modernisme.

The interest for a visitor is comparative. Stand on Plaça de l’Àngel and you can see, within one turn of the head, the Edifici de Sindicats at number 16, with its classical temple on the roof, and this block, which does the same job with none of the rhetoric. They were built five years apart on the same new avenue.

Inside, a bar on the ground floor keeps a floor of hydraulic mosaic laid in a grey chequer — two tiles, one plain grey and one white with a grey cross — recorded in the city’s participatory census of mosaics.

Practical information

  • An office building in use: the exterior is the visit. Best seen from the middle of Plaça de l’Àngel, where the curve of the corner reads properly.
  • The Jaume I metro station is on the square.
