Venice, Veneto · Offices
At a glance
Beside Santa Lucia station, on the Fondamenta Santa Lucia, stands a long brick building with an arcade at ground level. It went up as part of the rebuilding of this corner of Venice around the new railway terminus, and today it holds offices of the Regione del Veneto — the Palazzo Grandi Stazioni. It is one of the first Venetian buildings most visitors see, and almost nobody looks at it.
Key facts
- Location: Fondamenta Santa Lucia, Cannaregio, beside Venezia Santa Lucia station
- Now: offices of the Regione del Veneto
- Context: the rebuilding of the station area in the first half of the twentieth century
- Form: brick elevations over a ground-floor arcade, tall narrow windows
- Coordinates: 45.4396748, 12.3200802
What you see
The building is faced entirely in brick, with tall narrow windows set in a regular grid and small stone balustrades under them. At ground level an arcade runs the length of the front, holding shops and passageways, and the whole block is lifted above the fondamenta on a stone base.
It belongs to the same operation as the station opposite: a piece of twentieth-century Venice built at the scale of the railway rather than of the calli, and detailed in brick so as not to shout about it.
