Santarcangelo di Romagna, Emilia-Romagna · Cinema and cultural centre

At a glance

On Piazza Marconi, at the foot of the old town, stands a white building with a curved end and a tall square tower over the entrance: the Supercinema. It is a cinema of the Rationalist manner, and it is still in use — the municipality has turned it into C’entro — Supercinema, a cultural centre that programmes film, music, performing arts and meetings. We publish it without a construction date: we could not find a source that gives one, or names the architect.

What you see

The building reads as two pieces joined. The first is a low block whose end is rolled into a full curve, rendered white and closed by a thin projecting cornice — the curve is the signature of Italian cinema architecture between the wars, borrowed from the streamlined forms the period associated with speed and modernity. The second is a tower in bare grey concrete, square in plan and rising well above the roof, with vertical slots cut into its upper part.

Between them, over the entrance, run three horizontal bands in relief, stepping down on either side of the doors. The vocabulary is that of the 1930s: no mouldings, no cornices in the classical sense, and the composition built out of plain volumes set against each other. Along the flank the windows are simple rectangles in a regular row.

A tower on a cinema was not only a design decision. It carried the name in lettering that could be read from across the square and, at night, the light — the part of the building that did the advertising.

The town around it

Santarcangelo is a hill town on the Via Emilia, with a medieval centre of brick streets above and a lower town along the road. The Supercinema sits on the boundary between the two, on the square at the foot of the climb: the twentieth century, built where the old town stops.

The streets above are worth the walk for their shopfronts, several of which still carry their painted signs and arched windows — among them the workshops of the printed-cloth trade for which Santarcangelo is known.
