Halfway down the Rambla, a pharmacy has been trading since 1850, when it opened as the Farmacia Masó Arumí. The front it wears now is of 1918: a wide semicircular arch over the mezzanine, green glazed ceramic on the piers, and a sign that still carries both names — FARMACIA NADAL, and under it ANTIGA Dr. MASÓ ARUMÍ, the old pharmacy of Doctor Masó Arumí.

What you see

The front turns the corner in green glazed ceramic, ribbed like bottle glass, with a red neon cross above. Over the door a wide semicircular arch frames a sculpted figure, and around it the stucco is worked into scrolls and medallions. The lettering is the part that carries the history: the present name above, the founder’s name below, kept on the sign for a hundred and seventy years.

The style is not the Modernisme the Rambla is known for. Ramon Puig i Gairalt signed the plans in 1918, when the fashion had moved on to Noucentisme — more disciplined, more classical in its proportions, and easier to miss.

The pharmacy today
