Füchsl Palace (Palatul Füchsl), Oradea

The building that started it all in Oradea: the city’s first Art Nouveau palace, carved with vines and grapes.

At a glance

The Füchsl Palace is the earliest Secession building in Oradea, the palace that opened the city’s great age of Art Nouveau. The architects Zoltán Bálint and Lajos Jámbor designed it, and it was built between autumn 1902 and spring 1903 in the Lechnerian Hungarian Secession. Its façade is wound with carved vines and grapes and the monogram of the Füchsl brothers who built it.

Key facts

  • Style: Hungarian Secession (Lechnerian)
  • Note: the first Art Nouveau palace in Oradea

History

When the Füchsl brothers, local merchants, commissioned a new palace, they reached for the newest style, and Bálint and Jámbor gave them the first Secession building in the city. Finished in 1903, it set off the boom that filled Oradea with Art Nouveau.

The vines and grapes carved across its front nod to the family trade, and their monogram, FT, is worked into the ornament. Restored, it stands at the start of the city’s Art Nouveau trail in more ways than one.

What you see

The façade follows the curving, plant-based manner of the Hungarian Secession that Ödön Lechner pioneered: vines and bunches of grapes climb the front, framing the windows, with the owners’ monogram set among them. After the historicist blocks around it, this was something new for Oradea in 1903.
