Stern Palace (Palatul Stern), Oradea
On Oradea’s grand promenade, another palace from the duo who shaped the city’s Art Nouveau.
At a glance
The Stern Palace stands on Strada Republicii, the elegant promenade through Oradea’s Art Nouveau quarter. Marcell Komor and Dezső Jakab, the architects of the city’s Black Eagle Palace and of Secession Subotica, designed it, and the work was completed in 1909. A commercial and residential palace, it joins the dense run of Art Nouveau buildings that give Oradea its character.

History
Oradea’s prosperity around 1900 filled its main streets with Secession palaces, and the partnership of Komor and Jakab was at the centre of the boom. For the Stern family they built a palace on the city’s smartest street, finished in 1909.
It belongs to the same wave of building that produced the Black Eagle Palace and the Moskovits palaces nearby. Restored along with much of the quarter, it is a stop on the city’s Art Nouveau trail.
What you see
The façade carries the measured Secession ornament of Komor and Jakab, decorative bands and ironwork over shopfronts and apartment windows. It reads as part of an ensemble rather than a solo turn, one more palace in a street built almost entirely in the style.
