Overview

Keukenhof opens eight weeks a year to show what seven million hand-planted bulbs can do – the Dutch growers’ 1949 cooperative shopwindow on the Keukenhof castle’s 15th-century kitchen grounds, landscaped 1857 by the Zocher father-son of Vondelpark fame. Tulip rivers under beeches, hyacinth scent-walls, and the pavilions’ hybrid premieres draw 1.5 million in the season’s blink.

History

Countess Jacoba van Beieren’s herb grounds named the place; the bulb barons’ export politics built the showcase as postwar trade diplomacy. Theme years, royal openings, and the surrounding Bollenstreek’s striped fields (best by bicycle) made the brand synonymous with Dutch spring; pandemic’s empty 2020 bloom streamed worldwide as consolation.

Architecture and Design

Zocher’s English landscape bones – ponds, sightlines, mature stands – carry the annual replanting’s designs; the Willem-Alexander pavilion’s lily and tulip shows rotate indoors. The windmill’s deck surveys the polder stripes.

Cultural significance

Keukenhof performs the Netherlands’ bulb identity – tulipmania’s heritage turned national choreography – horticulture’s most concentrated public spectacle.

Visiting today

Mid-April peaks the tulips; weekdays at opening dodge the coaches. Combine a polder cycle loop among the growing fields.

Getting there

Keukenhof Express buses run from Schiphol and Leiden in season; book timed tickets online.
