A medieval fortress ruin commanding the ancient route between the Adriatic and the Pannonian plain, Tržan Castle once governed the strategic mountain pass above the village of Modruš in central Croatia.
At a glance
Perched at 670 metres above sea level on the eastern slopes of Velika Kapela mountain, Tržan Castle sits on a steep ridge overlooking a crucial historical trade route. The castle served as the administrative seat of Modruš County from the 11th century, controlling passage between the Adriatic coast and the interior plains.
History
From the 11th century, Tržan Castle functioned as the administrative centre of Modruš County, which was later renamed Modruš-Rijeka County. The castle’s strategic location exploited an ancient road connecting the Roman towns of Senia (modern Senj) and Siscia (modern Sisak)—a vital artery linking Mediterranean and continental Europe. During the 18th century, this route was reconstructed, improved and renamed the Josephina road.
What you see
Today Tržan Castle survives as a ruin. Its position on a ridge of steep terrain demonstrates the medieval emphasis on defensive siting and visibility across the landscape.
Cultural significance
The castle embodies the medieval organisation of territorial control in the Lika region. Its placement reflects centuries of geopolitical importance—guarding the mountain passage that shaped trade, travel and military movement between the Adriatic world and the Hungarian plains.
