Palace Modello

A Baroque Revival masterpiece completed in 1885, this Rijeka landmark showcases ornate facades and sumptuous interiors by Vienna’s most celebrated theatre architects.

At a glance

Palace Modello stands as one of Rijeka’s most distinctive buildings, a five-storey Baroque Revival structure rich in decorative detail and architectural refinement. Built on the site of the demolished Adamichev theatre, it remains a prominent landmark in Croatia’s principal port city.

History

The palace was commissioned by Rijeka Bank and constructed between 1883 and 1885. It replaced the destroyed Adamichev theatre, transforming a vacant lot into a cultural and civic landmark. The architects Ferdinand Fellner and Herman Helmer—Vienna’s leading theatre designers—brought their expertise to this commercial palace, ensuring its prominence among the city’s finest buildings.

What you see

The facade is a masterwork of late Renaissance and Baroque ornamentation. Venetian sculptor Ignazio Donegani crafted the decorative elements that adorn the exterior, while the interior gala hall impresses with elaborate stuccowork. The building’s proportions and detailing reflect the sophisticated tastes of late 19th-century Austro-Hungarian merchant culture. Today, the ground floor houses Rijeka’s public library.

Cultural significance

Palace Modello exemplifies the cosmopolitan character of Austro-Hungarian Rijeka, when the port city attracted prominent Viennese architects and Italian craftsmen. Positioned near the Croatian National Theatre Ivan Zajc, it anchors the city’s cultural quarter. The building testifies to the region’s complex cultural heritage, blending Austrian design sensibility with Italian artistic craftsmanship.
