History
According to Tibetan tradition, Taktsé Castle served as the royal seat before the reign of Songtsen Gampo (604–650), Tibet’s great unifier. When Songtsen Gampo moved the capital to Lhasa, the fortress lost its role as the kingdom’s administrative center. Centuries later, the castle became home to the family of the Great Fifth Dalai Lama (1617–1682), Tibet’s most powerful religious and political leader. The Fifth Dalai Lama was born here, cementing the site’s place in Tibetan religious history.
