History
Constructed during the 12th century, the original church served dual purposes: religious worship and military defense for its quarter amid disputes with the neighboring parishes of St. Saturnino and Navarrería. A devastating fire in 1222 destroyed this Romanesque building entirely. The replacement was consecrated in 1231, establishing the structure that would evolve over centuries. In the 1880s, architect Angel Goicoechea designed a corner portico, executed by local contractor Blas Morte—a late-nineteenth-century enhancement that marks the church’s final major transformation.
What you see
The watch tower remains the most eloquent reminder of the church’s military origins. Its interior displays Gothic work from multiple phases, creating a palimpsest of medieval taste. A Baroque organ occupies the interior space. Externally, two Gothic portals and the apse survive from the medieval period, while the 1880s corner portico introduces Neoclassical restraint to the church’s northern approach.
