St Mark’s is a Grade II* listed church constructed between 1872 and 1874 in yellow brick with red brick detailing. Its exterior, inspired by thirteenth-century Gothic precedent, conceals a thoughtfully articulated interior with sculptural stone capitals and a descending ambulatory leading to the crypt.
History
Architect William White designed the church during the height of the Victorian Gothic revival. The building opened to a gradually declining congregation over the following century. In 1987, a church plant from Holy Trinity Brompton, led by Pastor Paul Perkin and his wife Christine with approximately fifty followers, sparked a spiritual and structural renewal. Renovation works culminated in 2007 with the opening of a new welcome hall and extended meeting hall.
What you see
The exterior displays yellow brick walls with red brick dressings and diapering, rising to a wooden belfry and shingled spire at the south-west corner. Inside, the nave comprises four bays with north aisles and is articulated by concrete piers bearing naturalistic stone-carved capitals created by sculptor Harry Hems. A tiled floor runs throughout. The choir stalls, pulpit, and font were executed to White’s designs. Behind low brass rails, the altar sits raised on a stone plinth. An ambulatory descends eastward to the crypt.
Cultural significance
St Mark’s reflects both Victorian architectural ambitions and late-twentieth-century evangelical Christianity. The 2012 Guardian article “Money becomes new church battleground” examined the parish as a focal point of wider Anglican theological tensions over issues of sexual ethics and women’s ordination. The church embodies the complex spiritual and institutional dynamics of contemporary Anglicanism.
