St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, Nassau: 114 years under Benedictine monks, a gathering point after Hurricane Dorian
Su West Street, nel centro storico di Nassau, la cattedrale di San Francesco Saverio è la sede dell’arcidiocesi cattolica di Nassau. La prima pietra fu posata il 25 agosto 1885 da Lady Georgiana Ayde-Curran, dopo che lei e il marito avevano scritto quello stesso anno all’arcivescovo di New York Michael A. Corrigan chiedendo l’invio di un sacerdote residente; la prima messa vi fu celebrata il 7 novembre 1886 e l’edificio fu dedicato il 13 febbraio 1887 dallo stesso Corrigan, quando le Bahamas ricadevano ancora sotto la giurisdizione ecclesiastica di New York. Nel 1899 due transetti raddoppiarono la capienza della chiesa, e nel 1934 un’estensione meridionale con due torri la raddoppiò nuovamente, per servire una comunità di convertiti in crescita; l’edificio divenne pro-cattedrale il 7 febbraio 1932 e cattedrale a pieno titolo il 5 luglio 1960, con l’erezione della diocesi di Nassau. Nel 2004 fu dedicata una nuova cattedrale a circa diciassette metri dall’edificio ottocentesco originario, che resta in uso ed è oggi indicato come “vecchia cattedrale”; non risulta documentato il nome di un architetto, e l’attribuzione dello stile a un generico neogotico compare solo in fonti turistiche di qualità modesta. Padre Chrysostom Schreiner, monaco benedettino dell’abbazia di Saint John a Collegeville, nel Minnesota, arrivò a Nassau il 2 febbraio 1891 come primo sacerdote cattolico residente permanente, trovandovi appena sessantacinque-settanta cattolici; i benedettini di Saint John guidarono la missione e poi la diocesi delle Bahamas per centoquattordici anni consecutivi, dal 1891 al 2005, inclusi due dei primi tre vescovi. La prefettura apostolica delle Bahamas fu eretta il 21 marzo 1929, elevata a vicariato nel 1941, a diocesi nel 1960 e ad arcidiocesi metropolitana il 22 giugno 1999; l’attuale arcivescovo è Patrick Christopher Pinder, in carica dal 2004, primo bahamense nativo a ricoprire la carica. I cattolici rappresentano una minoranza in un paese storicamente protestante: il censimento nazionale del 2022 ne conta trentaquattromilasettecentoquarantanove, in calo rispetto ai quarantaduemiladuecentottantasette del 2010, facendoli scendere per la prima volta fuori dai primi tre gruppi religiosi del paese, dietro battisti, anglicani e cristiani non denominazionali; le statistiche di fonte arcidiocesana, che includono però anche le Bermuda e le Turks e Caicos, indicano cifre più alte. Papa Giovanni Paolo II visitò Nassau il 1° febbraio 1979, ultima tappa di un viaggio iniziato nella Repubblica Dominicana e in Messico, sebbene non risulti confermato se la visita abbia incluso questa cattedrale specificamente. Dopo il devastante uragano Dorian del settembre 2019, che colpì duramente le isole di Abaco e Grand Bahama senza però interessare direttamente l’isola di New Providence dove sorge Nassau, l’arcivescovo Pinder celebrò qui una messa circa una settimana dopo la tempesta, come parte della risposta pastorale della Chiesa alla catastrofe.

History
Founded in 1885 at the request of a local couple who wrote directly to the Archbishop of New York for a resident priest, the cathedral’s Catholic community was shaped for more than a century by Benedictine monks from Minnesota’s Saint John’s Abbey, who led the mission and later the diocese continuously from 1891 until 2005. Long after New Providence Island itself escaped the worst of Hurricane Dorian’s 2019 devastation of the northern Bahamas, the cathedral served as a gathering point for the Church’s disaster-relief response, even as the country’s Catholic population had already begun the demographic decline that would, by the 2022 census, push it out of the Bahamas’s traditional top three religious groups for the first time.
