The primary school of the Lido and the middle school beside it share a yellow building with a rounded corner and continuous bands of windows, in the modern manner of the 1930s. The Comune documents its rooms and its size; nobody, so far, its date or its architect.
At a glance
The Scuola Primaria Aristide Gabelli stands at Via Sandro Gallo 34, on the long road that runs down the Lido from Santa Maria Elisabetta towards Malamocco, with the Scuola Secondaria di primo grado Vettor Pisani in the same complex. The Comune di Venezia’s survey of school buildings for 2014–15 records a municipal building of 1,526.72 square metres in all, 968.42 of them for teaching: fourteen ordinary classrooms, five rooms for laboratories, a library, a gymnasium of 128 square metres with its own entrance, three refectory rooms and a lift, with 271 pupils enrolled that year. The school is named after the pedagogist Aristide Gabelli, whose name many Italian primary schools carry.
What this page does not say. The Comune’s catalogue of the Lido’s architecture, which lists more than three hundred buildings of the island street by street, has no entry for the school, and we found no published source on its construction. The 1930s date suggested by its forms is an impression from the photographs, not a documented fact.

What is known, and what is believed
The Lido that the school serves grew in the first decades of the twentieth century, when the bathing resort along the Gran Viale filled with villas and hotels and the island became a residential quarter of Venice: the Comune’s catalogue of its architecture, from which this site has drawn for several Lido pages, documents that building season villa by villa. A public school for the new population belongs to the same story, and the building’s rounded corner, flat roof and continuous rows of windows are the vocabulary that Italian school architecture adopted in the 1930s. Whether the Gabelli was built then, by whom, and under what name, remains to be documented; the catalogue does not include it, and the Comune’s survey describes the building as it is used today, not as it was built.
What you see
Three storeys in yellow plaster on a low brick plinth, with the corner towards the street rounded into a quarter-cylinder of windows. The classrooms show as long rows of large rectangular windows with timber frames, grouped in bands; the entrance, under a small canopy with the flags, sits in the middle of the front, reached by a ramp, and the wing to the right is set back a little. A palm and a tall cedar stand in the garden, which an iron fence on a brick wall separates from the pavement, and the fence is lined with the bicycles of the pupils.
