History
Sainte-Madeleine is the fourth church dedicated to Mary Magdalene erected in Strasbourg since the 13th century. The current structure originated in the late 15th century as a Gothic building. A devastating fire in 1904 destroyed much of the edifice, prompting a major reconstruction that incorporated the linear forms and organic ornamentation of Jugendstil—the German and Central European variant of Art Nouveau. The church endured further destruction during World War II, after which it was rebuilt in its modern configuration. The French state recognized its historical importance through classification as a historic monument on 6 December 1898.
