Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania
A monumental stone tomb on the road between Cherchell and Algiers, built as the final resting place of two sovereigns of the ancient kingdom of Mauretania.

This funerary monument rises from a hilltop 250 metres above sea level, its distinctive circular structure topped by a pyramid visible across the landscape. Built entirely of stone, it originally stood approximately 40 metres tall before damage from natural forces and vandalism reduced it to 30–32 metres. The remains of its royal occupants no longer lie within.
History
The mausoleum is traditionally identified as the burial site of Juba II, king of Mauretania and son of Juba I of Numidia, and his queen, Cleopatra Selene II. The monument represents a common typology of ancient funerary architecture found across Algeria. The human remains have since been removed from the site.
What you see
The structure rests on a square base measuring approximately 60 metres per side, topped by a circular tower crowned with a cone or pyramid. Originally, 60 Ionic columns decorated the base; their capitals were removed, possibly taken by thieves. Two vaulted burial chambers lie at the centre, separated by a short passage and connected by a gallery with stone doors operated by levers. The larger chamber measures roughly 142 feet long, 11 feet wide, and 11 feet high.
Cultural significance
The monument stands as testament to the power and ambition of Mauretania’s royal dynasty during the early Roman period. Its architectural grandeur and engineering reflect the kingdom’s wealth and cultural connections to Hellenistic traditions. The mausoleum remains one of North Africa’s most substantial surviving ancient funerary structures.
