History
The earthquake of 1693 devastated the ancient city of Ragusa. In its reconstruction, planners implemented ambitious construction projects that established the district’s distinctive late Baroque character. In 1865, Ragusa Ibla became administratively independent, functioning as the autonomous municipality of Ragusa Inferiore until 1922, when it took its present name.
