At a glance
On via San Jacopo a stone doorway carries three carved panels and two lines of lettering: PUBBLICA ASSISTENZA above, L’AVVENIRE below. It is not the office of a newspaper — L’Avvenire, the future, is the name the founders gave their society. They were ten working men of Prato, and in 1899 they set up a lay mutual-aid and ambulance association as an alternative to the religious Misericordia that had run such things until then. The building they are remembered in took them from 1913 to 1927 to finish.

What you see
The front is stone at ground level, with a broad arched entrance between banded pilasters. Over the arch, three relief panels show scenes of rescue and care — the work the society exists to do — and between them a lamp bracket. The lettering is cut straight into the stone: the institution above, the name below.
Inside the entrance hall, a marble tablet lists the founders. It records that the society had its origin in Prato on 25 August 1899, under the auspices, in its own words, «di pochi eletti operai» — of a few chosen working men — and then it names them, ten of them, one to a line: Brogi Brunetto, Cavaciocchi Gino, Cintolesi Giuseppe, Corsani Mariano, Grazzini Giovanni, Papi Giovacchino, Pierotti Carlo, Targetti Alfredo, Vannucchi Vittorio, Vinattieri Felice. The tablet is dated 16 October 1921.
Two dates for one foundation: the tablet the society itself put up says 25 August 1899, the archival record says 1 September. The first is probably the meeting, the second the formal act. We give both rather than choose.
