Its Art Deco facade and ornate interior reflected the national ambition of the Paramount Pictures chain, which brought its brand of Hollywood glamour to mid-size American cities. History

Anderson developed as a manufacturing center northeast of Indianapolis, its economy built on the glass, automotive parts, and electric supply industries that drove Indiana’s industrial growth in the early twentieth century. By 1929, Anderson was prosperous enough to attract a full-scale Paramount Pictures theater, part of the studio’s strategy of building or acquiring theaters in cities across the country to ensure exhibition for its Hollywood productions.

The theater opened the same year as the stock market crash, but survived the Depression and continued to serve Anderson’s downtown population through the mid-twentieth century. The postwar decline of downtown retail districts and the rise of suburban multiplexes reduced the Paramount’s audience, and the theater passed through ownership changes before preservation efforts gained momentum.

The restoration of the Paramount Theatre has become central to Anderson’s downtown revitalization effort. Volunteer organizations and community investment have returned the auditorium to active use, making the theater once again a gathering point for the city’s cultural life and a landmark for visitors interested in Art Deco architecture.

What you see

The Paramount’s Meridian Street facade displays the characteristic Art Deco confidence of late 1920s theater design: a bold vertical composition in brick and terra cotta, the marquee projecting over the sidewalk with lettering that reads as period typography even when updated. The entrance sequence moves visitors from the commercial street into the theater’s lobby through a gradual transition designed to heighten anticipation.

The auditorium interior shows the influence of the atmospheric theater style that dominated movie palace design in the 1920s: a layered treatment of walls and ceiling in which plasterwork, painted surfaces, and theatrical lighting combine to create a sense of being transported into an exotic or idealized environment. Restoration work has preserved or recreated these elements, so that the interior offers a relatively authentic experience of what attending a 1929 picture palace felt like.
