Piacentini answered Via Toledo with a wall of stone and a giant order: a bank built to look like the state.

The Palazzo del Banco di Napoli occupies a long stretch of Via Toledo, the city’s main street. Designed by Marcello Piacentini and built in 1939–1940, it is one of the most imposing examples of monumental Rationalism in Naples. Since 2022 it has housed the Naples branch of the Gallerie d’Italia, the museum of Intesa Sanpaolo.

History
Marcello Piacentini, the leading architect of the regime’s public works, designed the new headquarters of the Banco di Napoli on Via Toledo from 1938; it opened on 9 May 1940. In the 1980s the facade and forecourt were modified by Nicola Pagliara.
Since 2022 the palace has been the Naples home of the Gallerie d’Italia, the art museum of Intesa Sanpaolo, with more than 10,000 square metres of exhibition space, restored to a design by Michele De Lucchi (AMDL Circle).
What you see
The Via Toledo front is a severe composition of pale stone, organised by a giant order and a deep, regular rhythm of openings — the stripped-classical monumentality Piacentini made his trademark.
Inside, the second-floor assembly hall is clad in marble brought from Ethiopia, and the spaces play on strong chiaroscuro and shifts of colour from room to room.

Getting there
The palace is at Via Toledo 177/178, in the heart of Naples. Metro Line 1 stops at Toledo and Municipio; the street is a short walk from Piazza del Plebiscito and Galleria Umberto I.
