A station built like a palace: Cesare Ottino faced Genoa’s eastern terminus in white granite, griffins and the city’s painted arms.

Genova Brignole is the city’s eastern railway terminus, opened in 1905 on Piazza Verdi. Designed by the Turin engineer Cesare Ottino, it is one of Italy’s grandest station buildings of the early twentieth century: an eclectic, French-Renaissance revival front in pale stone, 105 metres long.

History
The Turin engineer Cesare Ottino designed the new station, built by the Genoese firm Bertoglio and opened in 1905, replacing an earlier and smaller building. It served the lines toward the Riviera di Levante and the city’s growing eastern districts.
The building takes up the romantic motifs of the French Renaissance revival, a deliberately rich civic statement for a city at the height of its maritime and industrial wealth.
What you see
The facade is built in white granite for the lesenes, jambs and cornices up to the first floor, with stone from the Montorfano quarries on Lake Maggiore above. The central front carries carved griffins, a polychrome shield bearing the arms of Genoa, and the head of Janus set above the clock.
The plan is organised on a central axis of symmetry, with three blocks of different heights. Inside, the halls were frescoed by Luigi De Servi, Dino Beroggio and Giovanni Grifo — the painted decoration that turns a transport hall into a piece of civic theatre.

Getting there
Brignole faces Piazza Verdi in east-central Genoa, linked to Genova Piazza Principe by the urban rail line and by frequent buses. Piazza De Ferrari and the historic centre are a short walk away.
