History
The idea for a monument on the Doss Trento arose in April 1938, when the Alpini proposed a memorial to the Italian mountain troops next to the tomb of Cesare Battisti during a gathering in Trento. The project for a “Castrum alpinum” on the summit was approved personally by Mussolini on 31 May 1941 and became law on 27 September of the same year. A meeting of the technical commission on 11 January 1940 mentions a specific architectural study for the entrance pillars of the new road. A memorandum on the state of the Acropoli Alpina foundation at January 1954 records that by 8 September 1943 the work consisted of a monumental road built by the Alpini and almost finished, but the pillars are not mentioned at that date.
What you see
The monument consists of a portion of masonry wall bounding the west side of Piazzale Divisioni Alpine. Five stone pillars rise along the wall, each topped with a carved stone eagle sculpture. The eagles face outward from their squared stone bases, with wings folded against their bodies. The wall and pillars form the entrance to the Strada degli Alpini, the road that leads up to the Doss Trento. The contributor also describes the monument as the monumental access to the Doss Trento.
