Hotel Bel-Air

A secluded Old Hollywood retreat set in twelve acres of gardens, where film stars lived, dined, and posed for their final portraits.

At a glance

Hotel Bel-Air is a boutique hotel in the Bel-Air Estates neighborhood of Los Angeles. It is one of nine luxury properties managed by the Dorchester Collection, owned by the Brunei Investment Agency. The hotel contains 103 rooms, 45 of which are suites, and occupies 12 acres (4.9 ha) of gardens.

History

The property sits just outside Beverly Hills and Westwood. It has regularly housed notable guests. Audrey Hepburn stayed here. So did Paul Newman and Robert Redford. Grace Kelly visited so often that a suite was later named after her. Six weeks before her death, Marilyn Monroe chose the hotel as the setting for her last Vogue magazine shoot.

What you see

The hotel carries an overall Old Hollywood style. Guests are received within a low-key, garden-bound compound rather than a high-rise block.

Cultural significance

The guest register reads like a mid-century film ledger. Elizabeth Taylor, Robert Wagner, Judy Garland, Bette Davis, Lauren Bacall, and Jimmy Stewart all stayed at Hotel Bel-Air. Its appeal to actors and celebrities gave the hotel a quiet but persistent role in Hollywood’s social history.
