History
The station opened on 15 March 1899 as the London terminus of the Great Central Main Line, the last major railway to open in Britain for 100 years. It connected the capital to Leicester, Sheffield, and Manchester. Marylebone was the last of London’s main termini to be built, opening with only half of the platforms originally planned.
The Bakerloo line interchange arrived in 1907. Traffic declined from the mid-20th century, especially after the closure of the GCML, and by the 1980s closure threatened the station. It survived thanks to commuter services to Aylesbury and High Wycombe. In 1993, the Chiltern Main Line was inaugurated, bringing renewed purpose. Two additional platforms were added in 2006, followed by services to Oxford Parkway (2015) and Oxford (2016).
