History
Built between 1903 and 1913, the cathedral was established as the main church of the Russian Navy and consecrated to commemorate those lost at sea. It was converted into a cinema, then a House of Officers in 1939, and eventually became a museum of the Navy in 1980.
The Russian Orthodox Church began its restoration in 2002 when the cross was reinstalled on the main dome. The Divine Liturgy returned to the cathedral in 2005 for the first time since 1929. In 2013, the Patriarch of Russia presided over a grand reconsecration ceremony, attended by Prime Minister Dmitriy Medvedev and his spouse, marking the cathedral’s full restoration.
