History
After completing their own pilgrimage in 1486, Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon—the Catholic Monarchs—resolved to establish a hostelry and hospital for pilgrims at the end of the Way of St. James. They funded the project in 1499, construction commenced in 1501, and the complex took over a decade to complete.
For four centuries, it served its dual purpose as shelter and medical refuge. In 1953, hospital services relocated to a modern facility nearby, and the following year the hostelry reopened as a luxury hotel following extensive renovation. The Paradores network absorbed it in 1986, beginning a new chapter of refined hospitality.
