History
The building originated as a clubhouse for the Shanghai Race Club, standing where the Shanghai race course once commanded the landscape that would become People’s Square. The Shanghai Art Museum was established as a dedicated art institution and launched the Shanghai Biennale in 1996 under director Fang Zengxian, establishing the city as a nexus for contemporary Asian art. In October 2012, the museum relocated to the China pavilion at the former Expo 2010 site and was rebranded as the China Art Museum. The building subsequently found a new purpose housing the Shanghai History Museum, which had lacked a permanent home since 1999 due to urban redevelopment.
