A steel-framed market hall of 1909, gutted by war and history, brought back to life as the city’s food court.

Hala Koszyki opened in 1909 as a covered market for central Warsaw, designed by Juliusz Dzierżanowski. Behind brick gatehouses, an iron-and-steel hall carried the trade out of the weather. A century of war and neglect nearly erased it. A careful redevelopment reopened it in 2016 as a hall of bars, restaurants and shops, keeping the historic skin.

History
The hall served Warsaw’s householders from 1909, a single wide span where stalls could trade in the dry. Both world wars scarred the district, and the building was later left to decay.
Rather than clear the site, developers dismantled, repaired and rebuilt the structure, returning the brick gatehouses and ironwork. Since 2016 it has worked again as a public hall: the goods have changed, the architecture has not.
What you see
The street front is the giveaway: two brick pavilions with soft, curving Art Nouveau detail framing the entrance arch. Inside, slim steel columns lift a glazed roof, the daylight that markets always wanted. The wrought iron carries the whiplash lines that ran across Europe around 1900, here put to plain civic use.

Getting there
Koszyki sits in the Śródmieście district, a short walk from Politechnika metro (line 1). Several tram and bus lines pass along Koszykowa and nearby Marszałkowska.
