Gangō-ji

History
Gangō-ji was established as one of Japan’s first Buddhist temples, earning membership in the exclusive Seven Great Temples of Nara—a designation reflecting its spiritual and political influence. The temple flourished for centuries as a center of Buddhist learning and practice. During the Muromachi period (14th–16th centuries), it suffered catastrophic destruction, losing nearly all its structures and landholdings. The surrounding area gradually transformed into the residential community of Naramachi, which today occupies the majority of what was once sacred temple grounds.

Three separate temple buildings survive from the original complex, each now functioning independently. While limited in scale compared to the vast precinct of earlier centuries, these remaining structures offer insight into the temple’s architectural heritage and continue to serve their religious purpose within the modern urban landscape.
