Fertőrákos
A village on Hungary’s western frontier, Fertőrákos straddles the border with Austria at Lake Fertő. Its mithraeum, port, and contested twentieth-century history mark it as a place where empires, ideologies, and national identities have collided.
At a glance
Fertőrákos sits 10 km west of Sopron in northwestern Hungary, near the Austrian border and the shallow waters of Lake Fertő. A summer border checkpoint connects the village to the Austrian municipality of Mörbisch am See, serving pedestrians and cyclists. The village operates a small port with its own checkpoint and maintains a sand beach swimming area.
History
First documented in 1199 as Racus, the settlement later appeared in German records as Krewspach (1457) and Kroisbach. After World War I, the village participated in a 1921 plebiscite on Austrian versus Hungarian sovereignty. Though 60.7% of local voters favoured union with Austria, the broader region voted 65.1% to remain in Hungary—a outcome that shaped the frontier’s course.
During World War II, a Nazi transit camp operated in a local quarry. Hungarian Jewish prisoners and political detainees were held there; many perished on site, while others were transported to concentration camps in German-occupied Poland and Germany. A memorial plaque now marks the location.
What you see
The Fertorakos mithraeum, visible near the border, testifies to Roman military presence in the region. The village’s port and beach facilities reflect its role as a recreational gateway, whilst the transit camp memorial site preserves a difficult historical record in stone and inscription.
Cultural significance
Fertőrákos embodies competing claims to territory and belonging. Its 1921 plebiscite episode and World War II labour camp history illustrate how small border communities become stages for larger national and ideological struggles. Today the village forms part of the jointly designated Austrian-Hungarian Lake Fertő National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site, a symbol of transnational cooperation.
