Slovak Karst

A vast landscape of limestone plateaus and underground caverns in the Carpathian foothills, recognized for its ecological and geological significance.

At a glance

The Slovak Karst is a complex of enormous karst plains and plateaus formed in limestone terrain. Its protected status reflects both its natural importance and fragility as a karst ecosystem.

History

The landscape was designated a protected area in 1973. On 1 March 2002, Slovak Karst National Park was officially declared, establishing comprehensive protection for the region’s unique geology and biodiversity.

What you see

The Slovak Karst displays the classic features of karst topography—sinkholes, underground streams, and extensive cave systems carved through soluble limestone over millions of years. The surface alternates between open plateaus and forested areas, while beneath lies an intricate network of caverns.

Cultural significance

The region holds international recognition as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, acknowledging its ecological value and biodiversity. Parts of the Slovak Karst are designated as the UNESCO World Heritage Site Caves of Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst, shared with Hungary’s Aggtelek region and representing one of Europe’s most important karst landscapes.
