History
The Despot Stefan Tower, also known as Dizdar Tower, was constructed around 1405, shortly after Belgrade became the seat of Despot Stefan Lazarević and the capital of the Serbian Despotate. In May 1963, city officials, cultural heritage experts, and members of astronomical societies agreed to adapt the historic tower into an observatory. Installation of instruments was scheduled for autumn that year, with operations planned to commence in October 1963.
What you see
The tower houses two principal research instruments: a Zeiss refractor (110/2200mm) and a Tall 200 K reflector (200/2200mm), both deployed primarily for night-time celestial observation. Four panoramic telescopes are also mounted on the structure, allowing visitors to survey Belgrade’s urban landscape and surrounding terrain from an elevated vantage point.
Cultural significance
The tower embodies two distinct chapters of Belgrade’s heritage: medieval fortification and twentieth-century scientific inquiry. Its transformation from military outpost to public observatory demonstrates how historical structures can serve contemporary educational and cultural purposes while preserving their physical integrity.
