The church was constructed in 1502 on the site of an earlier wooden church destroyed by Tatars. The structure gained historical prominence when Bohdan Khmelnytsky, the Cossack military leader and hetman, visited the church during the 17th century—a period of profound upheaval across the region.
In June 2013, the church was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of a larger designation recognizing 16 wooden tserkvas (Orthodox churches) across the Carpathian region in Poland and Ukraine.
