Constanța Casino

A landmark Art Nouveau palace overlooking the Black Sea, this restored casino embodies a century of Constanța’s social and cultural life, from Belle Époque gambling house to wartime refuge and beyond.

At a glance

Built in 1910 on Constanța’s seafront, this Art Nouveau masterpiece stands as a symbol of the city’s cosmopolitan past. Damaged in two world wars yet repeatedly restored, it reopened to visitors in May 2025 after a comprehensive five-year renovation.

History

The site’s casino history began in 1880 with a wooden structure. Three iterations were constructed before the current building rose on the Peninsulă District waterfront. Designed by Daniel Renard and inaugurated in August 1910, it operated as a gambling establishment for 38 years before World War I brought bombardment by Bulgarian and German forces.

The building survived World War II, though ravaged, and briefly served as a wartime hospital. In 1948 the casino became a community centre; by 1960 it had been converted into a restaurant under the National Office of Tourism. Major repairs in 1986–1988 extended its life until abandonment in the early 21st century. After five years of restoration work, it welcomed visitors again on 21 May 2025.

What you see

The building exemplifies Art Nouveau design in its facade, proportions, and decorative vocabulary. Renard’s plans emphasize elegance and lightness characteristic of the 1910s aesthetic. Its position on the Black Sea seafront remains a defining feature, connecting the interior spaces to the maritime horizon.

Cultural significance

The Constanța Casino is recognized as a historic monument by the Romanian Ministry of Culture and National Patrimony. Beyond its architectural merit, it embodies the city’s transformation across a tumultuous century—from a Belle Époque leisure destination to a survivor of war, occupation, and political upheaval, now reclaimed as a cultural asset.
