Casa Rull
A masterwork of Catalan Modernisme, this townhouse designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner showcases the movement’s distinctive elegance and craftsmanship while serving contemporary Reus as a vibrant cultural venue.
At a glance
Casa Rull stands as a defining example of Catalan Modernista architecture in Reus. Commissioned by notary Pere Rull i Trilla and completed in 1900, the building represents the height of early 20th-century Catalan design. Today it functions as the headquarters of the Institute of Cultural Action for Reus, hosting exhibitions and cultural events open to the public.
History
Architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner designed Casa Rull in 1900 for a prominent local notary, Pere Rull i Trilla. The city council acquired the building in 1925 and has maintained it as public property ever since. A comprehensive renovation by local architect Joan Figuerola in 1996 restored the structure for its contemporary institutional role.
What you see
The building exemplifies Modernista design principles with refined ornamentation and distinctive stylistic flourishes characteristic of Domènech i Montaner’s work. Its façade and interior spaces reflect the movement’s synthesis of artistic ambition and functional elegance. Adjacent to the equally impressive Casa Gasull—also designed by Domènech i Montaner—Casa Rull forms part of a remarkable architectural ensemble in the city.
Cultural significance
Casa Rull possesses considerable architectural, historical, artistic, cultural and social importance. It represents both the aesthetic achievements of Catalan Modernisme and the prosperity of early 20th-century Reus. As a civic institution, it continues to serve cultural purposes, anchoring the city’s heritage while remaining actively engaged with contemporary artistic and educational programming.
