History
Count Eusebi de Güell commissioned Gaudí in 1898 to design a church for his textile workers’ settlement, but construction did not begin until 1908. The ambitious plan called for two naves, two towers, and a forty-meter-high central dome. When Count Güell died in 1914, the family suspended work. Between 1915 and 1917, builders completed and prepared the lower nave for worship, the only portion ever finished.

The crypt’s lower nave demonstrates Gaudí’s distinctive vocabulary: soaring columns, organic curves, and an integration of natural light through innovative fenestration.
