Cave of Chufín

Photographer Manuel de Cos Borbolla discovered the cave. Excavations revealed multiple occupation layers, with the oldest reaching back approximately 20,000 years, indicating sustained human use across millennia. The site documents long periods of Paleolithic activity in northern Iberia.

The modest chamber contains subtle engravings alongside paintings in red ochre. Animals dominate the imagery: red deer, goats, and cattle rendered in schematic form. Symbols appear throughout—linear “stick” motifs accompany the animal figures, while dotted patterns (puntillaje) mark other areas. One such dotted composition has been interpreted as a female form.

Chufín contributes to our understanding of early artistic expression and symbolic thought. The variety of techniques—painting, engraving, dotwork—and the abstract symbols suggest cognitive complexity and possibly ritual or spiritual purpose.
