CaixaForum Lleida
A former cinema on Avinguda de Blondel, reborn as one of Lleida’s principal cultural venues under a name locals still associate with its old bank tenant.

CaixaForum Lleida occupies a Catalan modernist building at the corner of Avinguda de Blondel and Avinguda de Madrid. Designed by the architect Francesc de Palau Morera Gatell, it counts among the tallest structures in the city. History
The building first opened as Cine Vinyes, a movie theatre honouring the pianist Ricardo Viñes. La Caixa acquired the property in 1985. Four years later, in 1989, it became a cultural centre, continuing a line of use that had never really strayed from culture. Lleida residents still call it MontepÃo, a name inherited from a bank once housed there. The centre took its current CaixaForum branding in 2008, aligning it with sister venues across Spain.

The exterior reads as Catalan modernism, tall and assertive against the surrounding streetscape. Inside, exhibition areas spread across several floors. An auditorium seats 235 people. Two smaller halls, each holding 50, host talks and screenings. The foyer doubles as a display space, where contemporary artwork greets visitors before they reach the galleries proper.
Cultural significance
CaixaForum Lleida anchors the city’s independent film scene. It hosts the Lleida Latin-American Film Festival each year. A recurring two-season programme, Amb veu pròpia, brings independent cinema to local audiences on a regular basis. The venue sits within a wider network of La Caixa cultural centres, including counterparts in Barcelona, Madrid, Palma and Tarragona, giving Lleida a stake in a nationwide cultural infrastructure.
