Brück House, Timișoara

A pharmacy below, apartments above, and one of Timișoara’s most photographed Secession facades in between: the Brück House watches over the corner of Piața Unirii.

At a glance

The Brück House closes the south-western corner of Piața Unirii. Built in 1910-1911 for the Brück family to a design associated with László Székely, working with builder-architect Arnold Merbl, it is among the most recognisable Secession buildings in the city — thanks to a facade of vivid ceramic decoration.

History

The plot had carried a pharmacy since the eighteenth century, and the new owners kept the tradition: the ground floor housed one after 1911 as well. Above it, the Brücks built rental apartments — the standard economics of the square, dressed here in exceptional ornament.

What you see

Glazed ceramic panels in greens and blues climb the facade between the windows, and floral reliefs gather under the eaves. The corner is cut and crowned with a small tower-like volume. It is the most colourful front on the square, especially in low afternoon light.

Cultural significance

The Brück House shows the Hungarian Secession’s love of applied ceramics — a technique that ties it to Budapest’s Zsolnay-clad landmarks. Restored around the city’s 2023 Capital of Culture year, it has become one of Timișoara’s calling-card images.
