The fortress stood on the bank of the Volga River, about 30 km downstream from its confluence with the Kama River, roughly 130 km from modern Kazan. Today the ancient site lies in Spassky District, while a small modern town named Bolgar—established in 1991—stands nearby to the west.
History
Bolghar rose to prominence as one of three principal centers of Volga Bulgarian power during the medieval period. The city maintained its significance through the 10th, 11th, and 12th centuries until the upheavals of the 13th century reshaped the political landscape.
